Biography
Over 35 years I have cultivated a multifaceted expertise spanning live sound engineering, recording production, and composition. I started with hands-on involvement as a trainee live sound technician which gave me a solid foundation in audio fundamentals, and practical proficiency in the integration of audio, lighting, and video equipment for live events. From there I moved on to mixing sound and touring with a wide variety of artists at both national and international level. However, recognizing the creative constraints within this sphere, I moved towards the recording aspect of the industry, where I assumed the roles of both a producer and recording engineer. This transition provided invaluable insights into the transformative and creative potential of technical sound manipulation.
In my capacity as a producer, I not only oversaw technical aspects but also contributed creatively by augmenting compositions with supplementary elements such as string arrangements, bass parts, or drum programming. This culminated in solo explorations into composition, brought about by collaborative endeavours with visual artist Lucy Phelan under the banner of “On The Verge Of Art.”
Through this collaboration, we crafted a series of Art Intervention videos, investigating the role and depiction of women in the major galleries of Europe, travelling to Milan, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London and Rome. My sound design and musical contributions were intricately intertwined with the thematic narratives and locales depicted by Lucy Phelan in these interventions. I subsequently developed these musical explorations into standalone compositions which I released as a solo album entitled ‘Interventions’. This in turn has led to my working with other visual artists in the Cork and Munster region on an ongoing basis
In January 2021, I was commissioned to compose original music for the feature-length documentary “Fairways to Happiness” directed by Doug Morrione, based in Dubai. This necessitated close collaboration with the director throughout the editing process, tailoring musical motifs to align with the evolving narratives within the film. I was required to write and record a variety of pieces of music that ranged from evocative signature themes rooted in Middle Eastern tonalities to pulsating house-style grooves for fashion sequences, and an array of ambient pieces capturing diverse moods within the film.
I have continued to work as a music producer since 2004, working with a large number of bands, singer songwriters, traditional and jazz ensembles. Much of this work has received extensive airplay on national radio and overseas.
In 2024 I completed a Postgraduate Masters Degree in Experimental Sound Practice at University College Cork graduating with first class honours.
In October 2025 I released ‘A Type of Space’ – an album of experimental ambient pieces combining field recordings and image data from photographs.
